I have a relatively popular male name: not ubiquitous, but familiar enough—in India. Stateside, Sam sounds vaguely related, so I've taken it on as my Starbucks name. Sam orders my coffees and makes restaurant reservations for me. He introduces me in short-lived conversations. His name is quick and perfectly dull, and unfailingly spelled correctly by the barista on my cup. I envy Sam sometimes.

Within a few months, we started seeing the lists with dozens of 'smilies': open-mouthed surprise, person wearing glasses, Abraham Lincoln, Santa Claus, the pope, and so on. Producing such clever compilations has become a serious hobby for some people. But only my two original smilies, plus the 'winky'  ;-)  and the 'noseless' variants seem to be in common use for actual communication. It’s interesting to note that Microsoft and AOL now intercept these character strings and turn them into little pictures. Personally, I think this destroys the whimsical element of the original.

Aber viel schlimmer ist die Botschaft, die hier vermittelt wird: Kind, hör gefälligst auf, dich für irgendwas zu engagieren! Es bringt sowieso nichts. Wir sind mächtiger als du und wenn du etwas machst, das uns ärgert, dann zwingen wir dich, aufzuhören!

Der Widerstand von Konsumenten und Verbraucherschützern gegen die Fastfoodisierung des Sushi ist bislang gering. Anbieter anderer industrieoptimierter Lebensmittel leben längst nicht so ruhig. So standen vor wenigen Jahren einige Pesto-Produzenten am Pranger, weil sie zu wenig oder gar keine Pinienkerne verwendeten. Sushi gilt demgegenüber weiterhin als naturbelassene, von Zusatzstoffen weitgehend freie Alternative zum schnellen Hamburger – obwohl ein Big Mac weniger Zusatzstoffe enthält als eine Portion Sushi-Ingwer.

    marc Erschreckend, dass selbst bei Sushi mittlerweile immer mehr auf Zusatzstoffe gesetzt wird. Bisher war mir das nicht bewusst. Ganz allgemein empfinde ich die gesamte Convenience Entwicklung (fertig und billig) mies. Aber warum sollte ich ein Schnitzel selbst panieren, wenn ich es im Toaster zubereiten kann ...

I really like to explore and create and design. I hope that my clients appreciate the type of work that I do and come to me for that. It’s what my shop is built on: not doing whatever comes through the door just to make money. I am not the right person for some jobs.
