In my wild fantasies, leaving the internet will make me better with my time, vastly more creative, a better friend, a better son and brother... a better Paul. In reality, I'll still be the same person, just with a huge professional and personal handicap. The things I'll miss most, like playing StarCraft with my friend from high school who lives in another state, or sharing Rdio and long read links with a co-worker at the next desk over, I hope to replace with more direct interactions, and more "meaningful" activities - whatever that means. The worst case scenario is that a year from now I'll b[…]

Markus Reuter People seriously need to learn to deal with the medium! These extreme escapes freak me out. Why don't you stay 'Paul' and learn to deal with the internet like you handle books, tv, music, or any other medium? Is it that hard? I am honestly wondering, why a tech journalist comes to that decision. The next time he should try to not use any kind of technical device, life like in the 18-somethings....

Michael Lapidakis I wonder what would happen if he tried to do the same thing with travel infrastructure. If he said" I won't drive, fly or take a taxi this entire year". He would be a hermit, stuck in the island that is his apartment. This is, more or less, what's going to happen to him when he "quits" the internet. Technology moves us forward whether it's roads or fiber optics.
By separating myself from the constant connectivity, I can see which aspects are truly valuable, which are distractions for me, and which parts are corrupting my very soul. What I worry is that I'm so "adept" at the internet that I've found ways to fill every crevice of my life with it, and I'm pretty sure the internet has invaded some places where it doesn't belong.
-
Michael Lapidakis I know for a fact I couldn't do this. I'm anxious to see how this little experiment turns out. If he can stick with it for the whole year or not. It would be hard for a "normal" person to do this, but as a tech journalist I would think it's going to be nearly impossible.
-
Marcel Wichmann I don't really understand what the point of all this is. Is there any possible conclusion besides "It's possible, but it's hard and you're gonna miss so much stuff."?
-
-
Andreas Hammer 1 Jahr ohne Internet. Wäre schon irgendwie... komisch?!
Mal sehen!

Florian Lehmuth Paul Miller is planning to leave the internet for a year.
